Jason

I won't defend _Ethelberta_, but I do remember reading _The Way of All Flesh_ for the first time in a hybrid grad/undergrad class on late Victorian/Edwardian literature.

If I recall correctly, Butler went over with the undergrads better than Bennett's _The Old Wives' Tale_, Gissing's _The Odd Women_, or Lawrence's _Sons and Lovers_. (Ok, that's not saying much, but still. Come to think of it, what a crazy class that was.) Butler's misanthropy turned out to be just entertaining enough to carry on through the last third.
