I'm curious: how widespread is the practice of using scare quotes like italics, to draw attention to a word? It's very common where I live, and it drives me crazy. A nearby parking lot has a sign warning drivers to "watch" for pedestrians. I always feel like I'm being told to go ahead and run people over, because the authorities will look the other way.
