Generally speaking, it is easier to write an article of the appropriate length than it is to edit an article of, oh, 11000+ words down to something resembling a not altogether inappropriate length.

No-one's ever given me a satisfactory answer as to why a journal article can't be 11,000+ words. Or, for that matter, my preferred 5,000 word format... Any clues?

Ah! I just cut an 11,000+ word chapter (NOT counting notes) down to 4500 words COUNTING notes! It hurt!

How about being able to write 300 pages on a subject, but not 20?
