I'm finishing up my brief NYC meet-up with Dad the Emeritus Historian of Graeco-Roman Egypt and Mom the Retired School Administrator. Needless to say, one of the first things we did was get Stranded. (Mom: "I'm an enabler!") We spent some time yesterday in the American Museum of Natural History, where we went through the fine exhibit on human evolution--stray thoughts of PZ Myers running through my head--and observed some decidedly outdated captions in the American mammals section. (The gray fox isn't much fun when you're hunting with hounds? Well, yes, people still do that, but...) Today, we saw the new Greek and Roman galleries at the Metropolitan, which are quite spectacular.
In any event, back to the village, where another graduate student application and some MA theses await. Not to mention all those books that need to go in boxes.
I visited NYC for the first time in March and the Strand was one of my first stops (I was looking for 19c British periodicals there, but didn't find any.) I also spent an entire afternoon at Argosy books on 59th, another amazing place. It's full of old books organized in no particular order (and though the shopkeeper assured me they didn't have any, I found a few volumes of women's periodicals!) I can't wait to go back.
