Signs that you seem not to understand "taking a sabbatical"
1. Have gone into the department every day since the semester began.
2. Still dealing with leftover graduate administrivia.
3. Feeling vague guilt about not attending a department meeting.
4. Experiencing fleeting moments of worry about not being in class.
5. Sitting in your department office with the door open.
Oh, lordy! I am with you! The reason I crossed 1/2 a continent and an entire ocean (and 7 time zones) for my sabbatical was to avoid... exactly what you describe. While I am often lonely in Paris (I know no one here), I cannot sit in my office, pay attention to meetings (and yes, I wonder vaguely what is happening that I don't know about... ), see students or colleagues or solve problems for other people. GO HOME! And find an office at a local library (instead of the one at school) and GO THERE. Just my 2cents. And dump the adminstrivia (I love this word!) one someone, anyone else by email today. Stand tough. Good luck.

By these standards, I "understand" sabbatical well. I have only been to campus once, and that was to receive some recognition on opening day. Since then, I have not gone to campus at all. Success! Now, if only I could get be more productive with my research and stop spending all of my time watching political train wrecks.
