Larry Zygmunt

The newish stage version of _Jane Eyre_ by Alan Stanford (just mounted, tolerably, in Pittsburgh) might be worth attention vis a vis JE's peculiar adaptation history. Unusually, it's slavishly faithful to the novel, so much so that it has no real reason to exist. On the other hand, I was surprised that a contemporary adaptation (2003) not only includes a full dose of St. John Rivers, cockeyed marriage proposal and all, but emphasizes the weird religiosity (and/or blasphemy) of the novel as much as the love story.
