Well, unless they're positively striving for anachronism, they'll likewise have updated the character Watson, including his habits of speech and address.

(BTW, wouldn't Holmes have had a vanilla first name before his Sherlock, like (Arthur) Neville Chamberlain, etc.?)

What about the reverse? Holmes, in something very much resembling throes, or at least a throe, calls Watson by his first name in an episode of the Granada series; such moments lack any punch if you buy the "I never called him Watson" business in A Slight Trick of the Mind.
