You've just started reading Le Carre? (Sorry, can't make the accent mark.) He's the best espionage genre writer, in my opinion, just because he gets the tone exactly right. He has a writerly tic of weird philo-Semitism, though; over and over in his novels there's a Jewish person who is presented as civilized representative of all that we are fighting for. Not in TTSS, though, as far as I remember.
