I wonder if the problem is in the "random" more than the "internet." Personally I hope for a day when professors will have put well-edited versions of public domain texts on the internet with their own commentaries. Students will save money, professors will continue to live off their salaries and not their royalties, and interested readers outside of academia will be able to find good editions for free too. I think we're partway there. (And I don't mean to make you more frustrated! I just like the prospect of not being limited by how much books cost or which translations are out of print.)
