Pavane sounds like it could be very interesting. I'm a sucker for alternative histories.

Pavane is wonderful. Go to your bookstore now and look for alternate histories, and the genre is dominated by Harry Turtledove and similar stuff: it's all war, war, war. I can't stand the stuff.

But Roberts wrote this amazingly gentle alternate history. There's pain and suffering and death in it, of course, but the lesson he's trying to get across is that there are more important things in history than winning battles.

'Gain' is a great novel, of course, I am a big fan of Powers and haven't read anything by him that I didn't like.
