- Michael Cunningham, Specimen Days (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 2005). Three interlocking tales, all under the aegis of Walt Whitman.
- L. P. Hartley, Eustace and Hilda (NYRB, 2001). Coming-of-age trilogy set in upper-class English society.
- David Mitchell, Number 9 Dream (Random House, 2003). Young Japanese man seeks his father in a phantasmagoric Tokyo.
Heard Michael Cunningham, whom I don't know, twice on the Radio last week. He sounded flat and polyestery. How can I tell a priori whether "Specimen Days" is any good?
