THANKS FOR THIS ! I KNOW YOU'RE AN ACADEMIC WHOIS SMART ENOUGH TO STICK TO HER AREAS OF INTEREST. NEVERTHELESS, THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING THIS WONDERFUL DAY AND EVENT. WORTHY OF A "WOW" !!!
HERE'S A BRIEF REPORT BELOW ON THE EXPERIENCE MY WIFE AND I HAD CAMPAIGNING IN ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI (WE CAME FROM PORTLAND, OREGON TO WORK FOR THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN):

"Hello all - -
We spent 5 days working on the campaign in our home town of St. Joseph, Missouri. Utterly grassroots efforts: We were given printouts of individuals & their addresses, along w/ some add'l demographic info. The job was canvassing ... getting out the vote. It's tiring and not particularly efficient, but a campaign necessity (see fivethirtyeight.com on this).

We were busy all day and tired at night (hilly river bluffs - most of the houses in our assigned areas had 12 or more steps up to the porch). Magnificent fall weather, so all was good in that dept. We only got sharp comments about once per day. It's the midwest, and most people are polite.

Most unforgettable remarks heard during our walking & talking & distributing of campaign material:

1. "I'm a White Supremist." That was his opening line when we walked up. Glad that this Butthead lookalike wasn't a "White Supremacist" !

2. "I voted for the brother." A white woman (50?) who was sitting on her porch smoking a cigarette.

3. "McCain's a shit." Her son or nephew (16?).

4. "Hey dude, no way I'm going to vote for that guy." Maybe 25?

All best wishes from Portland,
Rennie

P.S. BTW, it's pretty much a 50-50 state. Not sure if the results have been certified, but I think McCain wins the state by about 5000 votes out of about 2.8 million."

ALL BEST WISHES FROM PORTLAND,
