You do have a strange job. I believe that anything examined closely enough will yield connections and insights. But I'm not sure I could get up every morning to sift through the bad novel dross that you do.

I agree with Nimble, Professor Burstein. Whatever your other achievements, you've cured me of my fantasies of the delights of the academic life - not sweetness and light an the quest for "the essential character of human perfection", but an exploration of the foul rag-and-bone shops of the humsn imsgination.

Gothic + Catholicism = Englishness must have been borrowed straight from Pugin, wasn't it?

Oh, yes, Pugin is important there (Dering namechecks him), but it's a more general theme in English Catholic prose, too.
